2 cups milk
2 eggs, beaten
¼ cup butter
½ cup white or brown sugar
1 teaspoon nutmeg
¼ teaspoon salt
3 cups stale bread, cubed
Optional: ½ cup raisins
Lucy's Note: When my grandmother made this - it was always with her own homemade stale bread. This is a family favorite - but never as memorable as her version.
Combine the butter and milk and stir until the butter is melted. Cool to lukewarm. Combine the sugar, eggs, nutmeg and salt. Slowly add the milk mixture. Butter a 1½ quart glass casserole, put the bread cubes, and raisins in the dish. Pour the egg mixture on top. Bake at 350 degrees for 50 minutes or until set.
