1 cup sour cream
1½ cups sugar
⅔ cup shortening
1 level teaspoon salt
1 egg
flavoring of choice
5 cups flour
1 generous teaspoon baking soda
Lucy's Note: These were always James' favorite cookies - his mother's recipe. They were the ones Martha baked for Ruth and John the day she promised them all the cookies they could eat and lemonade they could drink - if they finished cultivating the garden that hot summer day. (Journal Chapter 6)
Cream together the sugar and shortening thoroughly. Add the egg and beat the mixture. Add the sour cream and mix well. Add the flavoring and dry ingredients. Chill the dough. Roll out and cut with a cookie cutter. Sprinkle with sugar and bake at 375 - 400 degrees for 8 - 12 minutes.
